The Lesson
In the 1970s, Jerry Lawson stood at the intersection of electronics and imagination. As the lead engineer at Fairchild Semiconductor, Lawson helped create the Fairchild Channel F — the first home video game console with swappable cartridges. Before this, games were hardwired into machines. Lawson’s modular design changed everything.
The cartridge system meant players could buy new games without replacing their console. It opened the door to game libraries, rental stores, and the entire idea of gaming as a platform. Lawson’s invention became the blueprint for every major console that followed.
