This hardcover journal features an image from The Tignon Collection — a series honoring the six African headwrap styles that free Black women in 1786 New Orleans transformed from an instrument of oppression into a crown of defiance.

In 1786 Spanish Governor Esteban Miró issued the Tignon Law — ordering free Black women to cover their hair with a simple cloth wrap. Free Black women responded by wrapping their tignons in the finest silk they owned. They pinned emerald brooches at the center. They hung pearl drops along the sides. They rose peacock feathers from the top. What began as an instrument of oppression became the most spectacular crown in the room.

The style became so iconic that Empress Joséphine of France eventually copied it. They erased who it came from.
